Abrüpt
It’s abrupt.
The word disperses into darkness, and all we have left are books
to throw into the world to express
dreams and screams. We organize ourselves
around texts that stir and revolt, alter themselves into anti-books,
run aground in sharing.
We manufacture transdialectics and traffic in paper,
we take note of a cyberpoetics whose words foment error
at the heart of reality. It makes noise. We are listening.1
The Abrüpt publishing house was established as a non-profit association in Zurich in 2018. The members of the team, faithful to the culture of the web, are not identified, which allows them to be perceived as a collective without representatives and in flux.
Their “factory” refers to a critically-minded editorial experiment.
A literary factory with sharp and experimental words that mixes theory and poetry.
Open culture and freedom of information as a space for social transformation. Faced with the often closed book industry, the spirit of piracy is omnipresent, as they disseminate, share, and liberate texts. Their texts are distributed in various forms: paper, digital, and HTML. It is the latter format that provides access to antilibers2.
The anti-book is a metamorphosis, it is disorder, it is the affirmation of a literature of short circuits, of its joyful circulation, against the era, against the book and its grammar, against its chain and its humming, for a future of alterations, for free and networked information, for a multitude enlightened by it3.
The anti-book as raw information, without borders, which unfolds through the movement of its sharing. Each work is accompanied by an artistic device that allows new reading possibilities to be discovered.
Their approach is a step away from intellectual property. The anti-books are distributed in .git format, an open source format, made available free of charge without commercial logic under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License4.
This license is characterized by the fact that all the material provided can be shared, copied, and transformed. This implies that the original work must be credited, any modifications must be indicated, and, if so, the result must be shared under the same license. Of course, commercial use is not permitted.
Abrüpt breaks away from the capitalist logic of books and attempts to show that it is possible to produce books differently in order to promote the dissemination of texts and ideas.
However, it is still important to stipulate that the collective is committed to ensuring “fair earnings for our authors and partners.” Due to the laws governing paper books, the latter must have a price.
Ratio = 1 paper book sold for every 10 downloads.
